Rhine barges outside a walled town, in a 15th-century German woodcut. Commercially the Rhine was probably the most important river, since its lower course could be navigated by many medieval seagoing vessels as far upstream as Cologne. Further up river, goods (and the occasional army) were carried by large flat-bottomed barges, with reinforced bulwarks to resist those collisions that were almost inevitable on a busy, swift-flowing stream. River navigation was itself in the hands of urban guilds of boatmen, who were largely left to their own devices by shipowners and the governing councils of Hanseatic seaports.
